Simple Mouse Locator App Reviews

5 Customer Reviews:

These comments are based on using the app on a Mid 2012 MacBook Air with 10.10.5 Yosemite. I tried a few Mouse Locator app but it would not respond to activation keys and you had to enable it every time you logged on (something to watch for) so I decided to splurge on Simple Mouse Locator. It works very well. Mouse highlighting is enabled using one or more of keystrokes, mouse waving, moving the mouse after a period of inactivity, and crossing between screens. The latter is great because I have a Dell U3415 connected to my MBA. The screen resolutions are very different and the mouse jumps vertically when crossing between them so it readily disappears from view. The keystroke options include 1-3 taps of the modifier keys (e.g. Shift) as well as hotkey combo’s. I prefer the former because (1) they’re simpler than finger-stretching hotkey combo’s, (2) they normally have no function so you won’t accidentally do something silly, and (3) there’s less chance of overwriting standard hotkey combo’s. I had trouble testing hotkey combo’s as it appears only some modifier keys can be used (e.g. Fn/F6 would work but not Control/F6); the default is all 4 modifier keys plus the Space bar. The mouse waving options include 1-6 waves either vertically or horizontally (who’d want 1???) The highlighting options include the diameter and thickness of the ring, it’s inner and outer colours, and some animation options. The latter don’t seem very important but the colours are because you wouldn’t likely want the highlighting to be the same colour as your screen background. Having two colours helps ensure highlighting works with different backgrounds, which is good design. I tested the app with the MBA’s keyboard and mouse pad as well as an old Logitech keyboard and mouse connected via a hub and everything still worked, i.e. double Shift key taps and mouse waving still highlighted the mouse pointer. So, overall it works very well with the only quirk being the acceptable hotkey combo’s are a mystery. Not bad for $1.39 CAD.

Exactly what I needed

Simple, easy to use, and exactly what I needed to work with two screens and a vision impairment. Thank you.

Siimple and Perfect

Been looking for something like this for awhile. Just wiggle the mouse to locate it. That’s it! Its changed my work life.

This is my first ever review…this app fit my need so perfectly and easily that I thought it was time to break that trend. It just works! Even though I see there are settings to be messed with, I have no need. It just works! If my mouse sits for awhile, or if my mouse crosses the plane between my two new 34” ultra-wide displays (the reason I was having a hard time locating my mouse) the cursor highlights wonderfully and I can go about my business…it just works…and that makes it perfect…well done…well done...

Says what it done. Does what it says.

A simple app but an indispensable one when using multiple displays.

Awesome!

Awesome app and very cool attention-grabbing animation effects. A true lifesaver when you're looking to locate that stray mouse pointer across the different screens.

Great tool to fix Photoshop!

If you use brushes in Photoshop, you may have noticed that certain combinations of background color and brush size make it just about impossible to see the cursor when you're painting or doing retouching. Simple Mouse Locator to the rescue - just turn it on (and the variety of options to do so make it easy) and you can make your cursor location very visible! It's not an overstatement to say that this tool has made it possible for me to use Photoshop again. And almost possible for me to forgive Adobe for their inexcusable lack of support, but that's another matter).

Great app, even better developer

I purchased the app for use for technical demonstrations during trainings, and it worked great. The tool draws attention in a quick, stylish way to your mouse, to highlight for folks where to click, where to look, etc. However, after an OS update, it broke. I reached out to the developer, and not only did they respond, they provided me a license to a different product to try to tide me over while they fixed the bugs in Simple Mouse Locator. Once they finally did fix the bugs, they emailed me back to let me know. Stellar support for an incredibly useful app. I highly recommend it.

Must-have utility for large or multiple monitors

I've been using a utility like this for years with my multiple monitors. I have it set to activate when it crosses borders and after 1 minute of inactivity when I move the mouse again. Late last year it stopped working with the Big Sur update and the developer tried to give me an alternative but it just wasn't the same. Today, the developer e-mailed me to let me know that a Big Sur update was out. That is great customer service! I'm so happy to have my little green circle back again.

IanJulie · 4 years ago

Was about to give this up

This May 2021 update is what was needed. I use this for training especially as we continue to work from home. And the animation repeat had stopped working awhile back. That is such an underrated function.

Avoid Version 1.7 on Catalina: Locator disappears

Updated review Just as reported fby others for earlier versions on Big Sur, the locator appears briefly and then vanishes.. Email to Support is not delivered.. Earlier Review t took me a little trial and error to get the hang of the locator activation options. You can turn on more than one, but I settled for just a double tap of CMD. I complained about a problem in a prior review and the dev responded the next day with advice to change a setting in System Preferences (register the app to monitor keyboard input). See the FAQ on his website.

Must have.

I cannot say enough good about this simple tool. When another similar tool I used for years went to an absurd "subscription model" for doing some of the same things that this one does I had to go without.. then I found Simple Mouse Locator. It might not seem like much, but being able to find your mouse cursor by just tapping a key goes a long way on a 4k screen. And their response to questions and support when I had a problem on Big Sur was great. Totally worth the money.

Best Mouse Locator App

The best mouse locator app available! The animation controls and customizable colors give you complete control over the locator effect. I use this daily for screencasting, webinars, and virtual meetings.

Needs update for Big Sur

This application worked really well under Catalina, but since my upgrade to Big Sur, the cursor locator stays on the screen for only a fraction of a second before disappearing, no matter how long you have it set to stay on the screen (that's under the animated locator). The static locator briefly (less than a second) shows the actual location, then moves to the lower left of the screen even though the actual cursor location hasn't changed.

It worked very well with older versions of OS Did not work well the new Mac OS Big Sur

Does not work with Mac OS Big Sur

I loved this mouse locator until I updated my mac to OS Big Sur and now it doesn't work. I've tried restarting my Macbook and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but I haven't gotten it to work. Waiting on support to figure it out. I would love to give this 5 stars but now it seems unusable.

Emery · 5 years ago

problem with Big Sur

For some reason the display time control does not work under Big Sur. The cursor is marked by the program but the display vanishes in less than a second. Moving the display time control does nothing. A good utility otherwise and I hope the author will fix this

Fine replacement for Mouse Locator on Catalina

Easy to set up and configure... I changed the default behavior to a static ring, as thick as possible, and bigger than the default and staying visible longer... orange and red. Upgraded to Catalina from Mojave and REALLY missed Mouse Locator immediately. Though it doesn't allow us to use our own custom locator graphics, and no transparency adjustment, the function is exactly what I need to quickly find my mouse pointer across my 5 screens. I would buy again.

Issues with new Macbook Pro M1

The circle barely stays on the screen and trying to change the settings doesn't resolve the issue. It flashes for a brief milisecond and then goes away. I can't get it to do anything differently.

BrynShane · 5 years ago

Doesn't seem to work almost at all

This only works while the "locator center" is open. Not very much help. I want it to animate briefly when I move the cursor after a short period of time. No Such Luck!

Dutchster · 5 years ago

Does not work for mojave

Setting up the app is easy and it works great as long as the app is in focus. As soon as the app is out of focus, the locator lags so much that it doesn't activate on the active locator and on the static locator it trails behind in blips. My computer is a 2018 macbook pro 15 inch mojave 10.14.6 update: 2020-01-12 Developer messaged me to email them. I already did beforehand but there was no response for several days before the review. 2020-01-13 Developer messaged me and gave me a promo code for a different app which works wonderfully

Simple, seems flawless

I was looking for a replacement for the old Mouse Locator software that stopped working after OSX 10.6, and this one seems perfect. There’s almost nothing to it, but the interface is clean, simple, customizable, etc. Something like this ought to be built into the OS, but in the mean time this is very much worth it. (and underpriced in my opinion!)

Perfect one trick pony

Working with 3 monitors and being over 50 makes this utility a necessity. I've used a mouse locator for years but the old 32 bit became problematic. This works much better for me than the built in mouse locator and has some very nice options. (disable when using one monitor!) After one hour of use I'm totally sold. At times I get annoyed at paying for something that seems so simple it should be freely available somewhere. But if you are going to charge make it a fleshed out finished product, which is exactly what this is. Nice work. And triple the price.

Croyd · 6 years ago

Very nearly perfect

I purchased this to replace the long-standing Mouse Locator that I’ve been using for years. But it’s only 32bit and hasn’t been updated by the developer for as long as I have used it, which was unfortunate. I even created a macro to launch it when starting up or logging into my Macs. But it’s days had been numbered for a long time with the overall demise of 32 bit apps. Then I found this one. Very nearly perfect. Once I got all of the settings to my personal liking, it does exactly what I need. I have two large monitors here and finding the cursor has always been an ongoing frustration. This app works great; simple, to the point, and seemingly bulletproof at this time. Great work Code Race!

Great Developer

Had an issue, post-OS update. Wrote developer who responded within 24 hrs with a solution that worked immediately. Nice job.

francoisdooshvassa · 6 years ago

Too much trouble to use

UPDATE Jun 13, 2019 - the developer responded almost immediately and helped with a solution, I changed my review to 4 stars solely on the responsiveness and help they gave me. Kudos and thanks! Jun 12, 2019 I am running 3 monitors and finding the mouse is a pain in the neck. This app seemed like the answer. WHEN it works it's great, the issue is that it often doesn't. After a few minutes it seems to deactivate, after waking from screen saver it deactivates, it won't activate with the mouse, trackpad movement etc. Restart works for a few mins then it doesn't. Great try, I guess with the price point it isn't worth trying to get the 0.99 back.

my "review"…

Can someone tell me why Simple Mouse Locator disappears sometimes… and I have to open the System Preferences folder and open SML's page to re-activate it… It is Mojave compatible?

Michael A Lang · 7 years ago

Lags behind mouse on brand new Macbook Pro

Locator rings help find mouse as advertised. However, when moving the mouse the rings lag behind the mouse position and update in a choppy fashion to the point that it is not only annoying, but nearly unusable in my opinion.

Great customer service

I had a problem with this app and heard back from the company the next day. I received an upgrade to mypoint light, which is an even better program. Highly recommend!

Finally, a mouse shaker that works!

I've tried others in the store, and this one has the fastest response time on my iMac with two external Dell monitors on the sides. Does what it's suppposed to!

Jiggy Gaton · 7 years ago

A True Game Changer

This is one of those things that should be native to any Mac, but nice to have someone fill the gap. I do a lot of work in Pro Tools (audio workstation), which has a gray background with vertical grid lines, perfect for rendering the selection cursor invisible, a constant aggravation. Also, I use three monitors: two are 27”, the third one being a 65” Samsung for video production. When I move the cursor into that 3rd screen, it gets hard to see across the room. Not anymore! This app is a game changer for my overall workflow. Nice work!

Just what I was looking for

I have my Macbook Pro attached to a 4K monitor. I have the worst time going back and forth and sometimes just get totally lost on the 4K display. The Apple mouse shake is pretty lame for finding the cursor. This is WAY better - very obvious and very quick.

Croqueteer · 7 years ago

Off & On….

I’m confused on how this app has a perfect rating. The mouse locator turns off and on by itself constantly. I had to set up a hot key to enable the locator every time it turned off on it own which got very annyoing quickly...
